Bundaberg is home to organisations dedicated to building stronger, more inclusive communities. Among them is Carinbundi, a 30-year-old disability support provider leading the way in delivering high-quality services and fostering community inclusion. In a recent episode of the Partner Up Podcast, Tina Marshall, Carinbundi’s Community Relations Manager and Executive Assistant to its boards, shared her inspiring journey and the role collaboration plays in driving meaningful change.
A History of Dedication
For decades, Carinbundi has been a cornerstone of support for people with disabilities in Bundaberg. Tina, who relocated to the region two years ago, quickly embraced the organisation’s mission and began building connections in the local community.
Tina credited the All Abilities Alliance as a crucial starting point for forming relationships and understanding Bundaberg’s disability sector.
“The Alliance gave me the confidence to connect with others who share similar passions,” Tina said. “It’s been invaluable in helping me learn more about the work I do and the community I’m now proud to call home.”
A Story of Collaboration
Tina’s career journey includes a remarkable example of collaboration from her time working on a busway project in the 2000s. Her team faced the challenge of building transport infrastructure through residential areas, a potentially contentious undertaking.
Through proactive communication and community involvement, her team turned challenges into opportunities for collaboration.
“We engaged directly with every affected individual,” Tina recalled. “From sitting in living rooms to attending P&C meetings, we ensured people were informed and had a say in the project’s delivery.”
She shared a touching story of an elderly resident who had to relocate for the project. The team went above and beyond, replicating the placement of his cherished belongings in his new home to ensure a smooth transition.
“That kind of collaboration—listening to people and involving them in the process—makes all the difference,” Tina reflected.
Partnerships for a Brighter Future
In her role at Carinbundi, Tina champions collaboration as a key to achieving shared goals. She emphasises the importance of identifying mutual wins in partnerships and fostering a sense of ownership among stakeholders.
“We all want the same thing: for people with disabilities to live independently and inclusively,” Tina said. “If we focus on complementing each other’s work rather than competing, we can achieve so much more.”
One shining example of collaboration is Bundaberg’s annual Options Day, an event showcasing resources, services, and connections for people with disabilities. The supportive environment fostered by the All Abilities Alliance underscores the region’s commitment to working together.
“No one is competing. It’s about delivering a fantastic day that benefits everyone involved,” Tina explained.
The Path Forward
As Bundaberg grows, Tina believes collaboration will remain central to addressing the region’s evolving needs. From improving transport options to extending support services into outlying areas, the potential for impactful partnerships is immense.
“I’ve lived and worked in many regions, and Bundaberg stands out for its connectedness and willingness to work together,” Tina said. “By sharing resources and ideas, we can ensure that everyone has access to the opportunities they deserve.”
Her advice to businesses or organisations hesitant about collaboration is simple: start by observing and listening.
“Once you feel comfortable, contribute,” Tina encouraged. “We’re not in competition. We’re working together for a shared purpose.”
